buzzy and booming,
joyful chaos descending
on these hometown ears
Now that I'm dwelling in Richmond proper1 again, I consider it a duty of sorts to dive headfirst into the local music scene. Besides the handful of bands I actually know personally (including RVA-via-W&M staples Twin Films, for whom I played bass back at school), I know very little about my hometown scene. I've been a scholar of Williamsburg’s local music for four years, but now it’s time to dive headfirst into this much, much larger pool. Today, trawling Bandcamp and procrastinating on emails, I stumbled across Dazy.
Dazy is a noisy pop outfit from here in the River City, a songwriter cranking out the catchiest feedback you've ever heard. Between squealing guitars and lo-fi drum machines, Dazy's brief compositions are held together by the sort of bulletproof melodies that evoke both Nuggets-eque Garage Rock of the 60s and high-energy Power Pop of the 80s. This compilation feels like a collection of credit-cueing coming-of-age closers run through a Big Muff fuzz pedal.
Check out "Perpetual Motion" and "Easy-Go-Round." Well, check out the whole thing, but start with those two.
Or will be, come August. Until my lease begins, however, I'm still enjoying the rent-free nostalgia of my childhood bedroom out in the RVA suburbs.
